Privacy policy

This policy explains how AJO Legal Limited (“AJO Legal”, “I”, “me”) collects, uses, stores and shares personal information, in line with the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020. It covers this website and the legal services I provide.
What I collect
- Contact details you give me when you email, phone or write to me, such as your name, phone number, email and postal address.
- Information about your matter, including details of your business, property, finances, family or trust arrangements where these are relevant to the work I’m doing for you.
- Identity information, such as copies of your passport or driver licence and proof of address, which I’m required to collect and verify under the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Financing of Terrorism Act 2009.
- Information about other people connected to your matter, such as the other party to a transaction, co-owners, trustees or beneficiaries.
- How you use this website, collected by analytics tools: pages visited, the device and browser you use, roughly where you are, and how you arrived.
How I use it
- To reply to your enquiry and provide legal services to you.
- To meet my legal and professional obligations, including under the Lawyers and Conveyancing Act 2006, the Rules of Conduct and Client Care for Lawyers, and anti-money laundering law.
- To send invoices and manage my trust account.
- To understand how this website is used, so I can improve it.
I don’t sell your personal information, and I won’t add you to a mailing list without asking.
Confidentiality
As your lawyer I owe you a duty of confidence, and much of what you tell me may be protected by legal professional privilege. I only share your information where it’s needed to carry out your instructions, where you agree, or where the law requires or allows it.
Who I may share it with
- People involved in your matter, such as other lawyers, banks and lenders, real estate agents, accountants, valuers, Land Information New Zealand, Inland Revenue, the Companies Office and the courts.
- Service providers who help me run my practice, such as IT, cloud storage, email, practice management and accounting providers. They may only use your information to provide their service to me.
- Regulators and government agencies, where the law requires it.
Analytics and cookies
This website uses Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics. These tools use cookies to record how visitors use the site. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and the site will still work.
Where your information is stored
I keep client files securely, in paper and electronic form. Some of my service providers, including Google, may store information outside New Zealand. I use reputable providers with security protections comparable to those required under New Zealand law.
How long I keep it
I keep client files and records for as long as I need them and for any period required by law and professional rules, including identity verification records under anti-money laundering law. After that, they are securely destroyed.
Your rights
You can ask to see the personal information I hold about you, and ask me to correct it. Email andrew@ajolegal.co.nz or call +64 9 302 1977. Some information, such as privileged material relating to other people, may be withheld where the Privacy Act allows. If you’re not happy with how I’ve handled your information, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.

I may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
